The Tryon Palace in New Bern, NC was originally built between 1767 and 1770, as the first permanent capitol of the Colony of North Carolina and a home for the Royal Governor and his family. Governor William Tryon brought John Hawks, an English architect, with him when he came to North Carolina in 1764. Hawks designed the Palace in the manner of a number of fashionable houses in the vicinity of London-- Georgian in style, with symmetry maintained throughout. It was soon regarded as the finest public building in the American colonies.  It was reconstructed from 1951 to 1959. Guides in period dress conduct tours of the building. Be sure to see the cellar, and extensive gardens.

The North Carolina Pottery Center in the town of Seagrove showcases the remarkable history and on-going tradition of pottery making in North Carolina. One of the state's key historical and contemporary pottery producing regions, the Center is your first stop in exploring North Carolina's rich clay heritage. About 30 miles south of Greensboro, the center is located at 233 East Avenue in the town of Seagrove. In addition it is a must that you stop in at the dozens of individual potter studios to see the latest creations.
